Skin Tips for Autumn

We know that as the seasons change and the temperatures decline, our skin becomes a bit drier and perhaps more sensitive. The air becomes drier within the home too so our skin has a whole host of changes to contend with in order to keep its radiance.

Here’s some simple & easy solutions to keeping your skins barrier strong & skin glowing:

  1. Central Heating can wreak havoc with your skin so keep the heating as low as you can bare it! When the air is dry, our skin’s barrier struggles to maintain its natural moisture. You could think about adding a humidifier to your home as a solution to keep moisture in the air. We spend so much time indoors so it would be a good investment!

2. Check in with how your skin is feeling as the temperatures start to change. You won’t need a complete skincare overhaul but it’s always a good idea to ensure you’re not using any harsh cleansers that strip away those natural oils that we want to look after in colder seasons.

That’s why I love the MV Skintherapy Gentle Cream cleanser & 9 Oil Radiance Tonic – they’re the perfect cleansing duo that gently, but effectively cleanse, tone & hydrate. Both work to restore & soothe the skin; perfect for winter!

You might want to consider adding a hydrating serum to your regime both day & night to give it an extra boost. Serums are packed full of active ingredients and will work much better at treating your skin than your moisturiser alone. The molecules are smaller and we can target those deeper layers with a serum.

Your moisturiser is the most important product to help protect those most exposed outer layers, so choose wisely! It can be an expensive game of trial & error as what works for one, may not work for the other. It’s important to get to know your skin type and to be familiar with changes in your skin due to hormonal fluctuations as this will typically have an impact on your decision making when it comes to choosing your cream.

At Naturisimo, they have a whole range of skincare products for different skin types.

As we head in to Autumn, I’m currently enjoying:

Tara Harper Water Lock Moisturiser –

It’s lightweight formula has water-locking technology to deliver a sustained dose of hydration to dull and dry skins. Can be used both am & pm. Contains Macro Hyaluronic Acid to condition and support your skin’s barrier.

If you’re skin is feeling dry don’t forget to exfoliate. Most people avoid exfoliating in winter, but I believe it’s more important. But do it cautiously, choose an exfoliator that is gentle & won’t disrupt the skin’s barrier. Exfoliating with a gentle product will keep skin healthy & improve cell turnover to reveal healthy skin underneath. If you’re skin is feeling irritated, once a week is enough. But typically, 2-3 a week is ideal. If you’re using retinol, keep in mind that these work to increase cell turnover too so you may not need more exfoliating.

My advice for home care is to always choose fine-grain exfoliators and do it consistently; rather than aggressive scrubs but less frequently.

3. Drink lots of water & eat plenty of vegetables so you can eat your way to a more hydrated you! Your skin will thank you for it!

I like to change the ingredients in my smoothies to suit the seasons. I love to swap Strawberries & Raspberries for Figs & Cranberries instead. The riper the fig, the more antioxidants we get from it.
